1.A Beif History...

We were both 18 the year that we met
I was slighty older but not by much
One look at you and I knew that was it
And your voice sounded like an angel above

One look at me you thought I was odd
Wearing those clothes in the Kimberley heat
Blundstone boots, cowboy hat, flannelette
And denim overcoat all the way down to my feet

When your sister asked me to join up with you
You nearly fainted with shock but you hid it well
“what the hell are you doing?”
you shouted when I left
I was singing all the way back to my hotel

Headed off from Broom
Travelled through the Kimberley
Derby, Fitzroy, a night in Halls Creek
Wyndham, Kunnunrra, Darwin we stayed for a while
Then we hit the coast near Townsville on the other side
Christmas in Cairns didn't have nowhere to go
Busking on the streets just to get a feed
Being kept up all night by the lovers on the top bunk
At a seedy backpackers called “Rapture of the Deep”

Now plenty has happened since those early days
Met a lot of people, been a lot of places
Many a night in friends and relatives beds
And God bless the lot of you that put us up and fed us
Played to crowds of thousands, played to one or two
Played in festivals and pubs, loved and hated what we do
but looking back now I wouldn't trade but
one of the memories we've made in the last eight years
and though there were times we didn't get along
I can honesty say I love the both of you

Now you're living in Sydney in some dingy room
In a house full of strangers on Ramsgate avenue
Paying twice as much as what the damn things worth
Working in the daytime just to make it though
You got your arms to your elbows in the sink at some
Place cleaning pots and pans, cups and saucers,
Knives and forks and plates
It's a far cry, from the life that we knew
Travelling around the country in a campervan
Playing songs, singing with your sister and you
It's too late to go back there again

2.Waif Song

We Drive An Old Beat Up Car
We Play Outta Tune Guitars
Mother Nature Keeps Us Safe
Even When Were Off Our Face

A Waif Is All I Wanna Be
Ts No Better For You No Worse For Me
Youve Got A Mobile Phone And Heaps Of Money
We Aint Got Much But At Least Were Free

You May Sit And Talk And Stare
But he's Not Gonna Cut His Hair
Not Goin To Patch My Jeans Or Wash My Face
Goin To Keep On Being A Waif

A Waif You See Is An Unloved Child
A Kid that's Stray And Gone Kinda Wild
You Can Change, Change Your Look
You Can Even Change Your Style
But Why don't You Come And Live With Us For Awhile

We Pick Up Work When We Can
Our Cloths Are All Second Hand
Harmonicas Are Old And Used
But We Still Know How To Play The Blues

3.Time To Part

It may sound strange to your baby,
oh yes indeed
But when I leave you tomorrow,
I'll be pleased
I have been scratchin' at you for too long, too long
I think it's time for us to part
I do believe, that it is time

It may sound strange to your baby,
yes, yes indeed
But when I leave you tomorrow,
I'll be pleased
I have been scratchin' at you for too long
I've torn your heart
There's blood on my hands, and its time for us to part

There was a time
(there was a time)
that you were my only one
there was a time
that you were my special friend, ohh
but now I hurt you every minute, every hour (every hour)
the cream of our love has gone sour
I'm the weed your the flower (the flower)
it's time for us to part
I think that it's time

Oh, did you see it comin' (no)
did you think it would end like this (uh-uh)
it should come as, no surprise (no surprise)
you should've known it in my kiss
cause then when the lights go down you stand me ok
I am a low down fishers daughter by the light of day
when it comes up I'll be no more in your way
it's time for us to part, oh

I think that it's time, yeah
I do believe
don't you know I have a,

you've had enough of me baby
I think its time

4.Stuck

You've been blind since you met him,
Girl you can't see a thing.

I can see your hands are tied,
Just as sure as they're behind your back.

Been putting up with him putting you down for too long now,
It's given him the upper hand.
The woman in you can make him cry he begs for more,
You mistake it for love, but you don't feel a thing,
You don't feel a thing.

Stuck, in the wrong place,
Stuck, at the wrong time.
Stuck, you're in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Move on move on move on,
You'd be better off on your own.
Cut the ties that hold you strong
What's the point in hanging on?
The feeling left you long ago,
Now there's a space where nothing grows.

Stuck, in the wrong place,
Stuck, at the wrong time.
Stuck in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

How many times have you said to yourself,
I feel like I'm doing this for somebody else?
Not getting enough of the things I need,
This love is bleeding me,
Every word I speak is true,
Believe me when I say that you are

Stuck in the wrong place,
Stuck in the wrong place,
Stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time, time time time.

Stuck in the wrong place,
Stuck, in the wrong place,
Stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You're in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Stuck in the wrong place,
Stuck in the wrong place,
At the wrong time.

5.Smith St

SMITH ST

Woohoo hey hey
Just a child being a child
She didn't do what you had told her too
Little big-eyed girl in a long world
Maybe she embarrassed you

With your fist you struck her down
You walked away you left her screaming
People lift their feet and step around
I'm just as guilty

You wouldn't treat a dog like that
Wouldn't kick it in the ribs and throw it out the back
Woo no

So what else could she do but run to you
When you walked off and left her in the streets all broken down
I can't understand the force of your hand
With strength of four men wouldn't knock me off my feet

She was only three
It's too late for me and my apologies
I still feel guilty for what I did not do
I should have helped you

I bet you've been hurt before
And you swore that you never would
Now look into your daughter's eyes
Are they just a mirror of your own childhood?

You wouldn't treat a dog like that
You wouldn't kick it in the ribs and throw it out the back
You wouldn't treat a dog like that
You wouldn't kick it in the ribs and throw it out the back
You wouldn't treat a dog like that
You wouldn't kick it in the ribs and throw it out the back
Hey ohh

You wouldn't treat a dog like that
And all we do is turn our backs

6.Papa

Well my Papa was a fisherman
And he fished the deep blue sea
Well he home-made some fine blackberry nip
And he'd always pause and nip on me

Well he smelled like black-tarred fishing nets
Oh tiger belly growl
Well he was my good Papa
But he be bones now

Granddaddy was a sailor
And he sailed from far across the sea
Well he did talk some kind of funny
But it never did bother me

When he spoke about his homeland
'Twas with a sad and furrowed brow
No more tears, Granddaddy
You just be bones now

Well I look now at my father
And his black hair's all gone grey
And the strong arms that did carry me
Well they're now withering away

Lay down your burdens, Papa
Won't you come sit with me at home
We've got to spend some time together
Before we just be bones

7.Highway One

highway one
12 hour drive
I got a place
I do call mine
got me a space where I can breathe
got my garden
got my trees

and if you're ever out this way
and if you still recall my name
and I'm not that hard to find
I live on...
highway one
12 hour drive

and we're gonna be
eatin fish from a coal fire
sleepin outside
till the fire's cold
oh till it gets too cold

but if you come through late at night
I'll leave on my bedside light--
drive home to the right
baby you can...
creep in and wake me

and we're gonna be
eatin fish from a coal fire
we're gonna be
sleepin outside
till the fire's cold
oh til it gets too cold

oh yeah

You know it's doubtful I will tell
where my love and I do lay
oh where my flowers grow

highway one
12 hour drive
highway one
12 hour drive
highway one
12 hour drive

I live on...
highway one
12 hour drive

Ah Yeah--.

8.Heartbreakin'

9.Fourth Floor

On the fourth floor of the building
With the shallow window box
She's digging in the soil with a silver spoon
Her hands inside rubber gloves

Planting seeds, pulling up weeds
The cycle of life is complete
Who would have thought it, in a city of stone
Four floors above the street

I cannot tell what kind of flowers they are
I'm too far below on the street
But the color they add to the building so drab
Brings a warm splash of welcome relief

Yeah, it's something worthwhile for the sun to shine on
A reason to radiate heat
Well that small window box, it was a skipping my feet
Four floors below on the street

For every good seed she plants in the soil
There's a dozen bad waiting to grow
To strangle the goodness she's trying to nurture
To kill all the seed that she's sown

Every time you water the garden
You also water the weeds
A foul administration of sin and temptation
Four floors above the street

Some people don't understand why she does it
Some people look for a reason
Maybe she just likes the feel of the soil
Or keeping in tune with the seasons

Maybe she has so much pride in herself
Got to keep it all visually pleasing
A small paradise in a world of concrete
Four floors above the street

A small paradise in a world of concrete
A small paradise in a world of concrete
A small paradise in a world of concrete
Four floors above the street
